Meet Slick Whiteline: From Standpipe to the Spotlight

For Swanda Powell, better known online as Slick Whiteline, comedy wasn't part of a carefully planned career. It started as a way to pass the time during one of the world's most uncertain moments.

Born and raised in Standpipe, St. Andrew, Jamaica, just across from the U.S. Embassy, Slick Whiteline began creating content in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought everyday life to a standstill.

Looking back on how it all began, he recalls:

"I got started creating content in 2020, the day corona hit the world, and we all had to quarantine. I was bored and looking for ways to entertain myself, so I started making videos."

What started as a way to stay occupied quickly evolved into a platform that resonates with Caribbean audiences around the world. Slick Whiteline credits that connection to staying authentic and keeping his comedy rooted in Jamaican culture.

"I'm an authentic comedian that sticks to my roots and culture. I try to make my skits as simple and effective as possible. Caribbean people all over the world can relate to my jokes."

One moment, however, reminded him just how far his comedy had come. Instead of paying to watch some of Jamaica's biggest entertainers perform, they were sitting in the audience watching him.

"My most memorable moment is performing stand-up comedy in front of Vybz Kartel, Konshens and Serani. That will forever be a memory because normally it would be the other way around—I'd pay to see the artists, now the artists are paying to see me."

While social media has helped build an audience of more than 500,000 followers, Slick Whiteline sees it as only the beginning. His biggest ambition is to transition from viral comedy into leading roles on the big screen.

"The biggest goal I'm working towards now is to star in a big movie. I've done movies before, but I've never had the leading role, so I'm definitely looking forward to that."

Throughout his journey, fellow Jamaican creator Andrew Trabass has remained both a close friend and an important mentor.

Slick Whiteline's career reflects a growing trend among Caribbean comedians who are using social media as a launchpad rather than a destination. In just a few years, he has grown from making videos during lockdown to building a community of over 500,000 followers, performing stand-up for some of Jamaica's biggest names in music, and setting his sights on film. His story is a reminder that when creators stay true to their culture, local humor can resonate far beyond the island, and sometimes become the first step toward an even bigger stage.
